Cracking Youthwork 2017 – transforming evangelism to young people

Cracking Youthwork 2017, a training event for everyone involved in youthwork in Guildford Diocese, took place on 4th February. All the speakers were given ten minutes, and we videoed them. Here’s Jimmy Dale, the Church of England’s national Youth Evangelism Officer speaking about transforming evangelism to young people.

Baby Jesus Rocks!

A brilliant tried and tested idea shared by Becky Speyer at the Bourne Parish:

Baby Jesus Rocks is a Christmas treasure hunt. The team at the Bourne Parish painted over 500 stones with an image of baby Jesus, and another team of people helped Becky hide them around the parish, ready for people to find.

“I’ve had people who would never come to church talking to me about the real meaning of Christmas. I’ve been into two of our local schools and talked in assembly about baby Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas with children who were thrilled to tell me all about the rocks they’d found and we’ve had parents sharing messages and photos with us via facebook.” – Becky

If you’re interested in doing this in your own parish take a look at St John’s Hartley Wintney’s step-by-step guide.

The original idea came from Chris Duffett’s blog:

Advent Journey: I Wonder Trail

A great idea from Hannah at Chiddingfold: To help children engage more fully with the prayer stations “On the Advent Journey” which had been placed in the church, she produced a series of I Wonder questions to use along side them. They can be found here

Welly Walk – Building Relationships in Your Parish

There is nothing like walking together to enable conversations to happen and relationships to flourish. Where better to walk than amongst the glorious colours of God’s creation in local woods this Autumn. Thanks to Archie and William, aged 9 and 7 for this report

The Welly Walk
On the 9th October, 86 people and around 7 dogs met on a very Autumnal and sunny afternoon. It was the second Parish Welly Walk. This time we started on Puttenham Common in the Middle Car Park. Young and older people came from inside and outside our Parish.

We met to enjoy a fun walk with friends we knew and some we didn’t know. On the way we did a nature spot to find: acorns, insects, a bird box, mushrooms, berries, moss, ferns, pine cones and many more Autumn objects. The pine cones were very tricky to find! The woods were starting to become really colourful and we kicked the leaves around while we walked.

After the walk we played and had tea, coffee, cake, sweets and biscuits. While the adults chatted, the children could do leaf rubbings, make leaf people or play with their friends.

Thank you to the Parish Churches for providing the refreshments and activities, and we hope there is another walk very soon!

Grave Talk

Many parishes are nervous about trying out a Grave Talk event because in the same way that the Victorians didn’t talk about sex, we don’t talk about death.  But if Christians can’t help people talk about dying, who can?   The following comments are from Burpham church following their Grave Talk event.

“I was amazed how well it went – the conversation was very free flowing and remarkably open. Some of the ladies on my table were widows so they had first-hand knowledge.
I used the grave talk cards to broaden the conversation a couple times but there was no shortage of conversation.
Then the funeral director chap asked for questions and both questions and answers were very open and blunt. There was then a desire to arrange a behind the scenes tour of the crem!”

“My main observation would be people were much more open and willing to talk about the reality and detail of death, funerals etc than I thought.”

No Music Group… No Problem: I Sing app

The launch video for Guildford Diocese’s new Mission Strategy showed a music group running with an app that enabled a couple of singers to sound like a whole band. You can find details of it at

There are other apps around, so if you use something else successfully, please add your comments below and share the knowledge around.

How to Survive a Christian Festival 5/5

So what do you do when young people feel challenged by a workshop or a speaker? How do we help young people hear God’s voice amidst what can be quite a confusing and disorientating experience? Our last video considers all these things. Watch out of 2 weeks time for our ‘how to survive re-entry to real life from a Christian Festival’ series. Also check back to see if we have come up with a better title…
