For the last 12 years or so we’ve been running a monthly ‘Songs of Praise’ service at 2.30pm on the fourth Weds of the month. It’s a simple ‘hymn sandwich’ service with a short message and lots of favourite hymns, mostly chosen month by month by the congregation. We serve tea and cake afterwards and have a simple Communion service to finish. We get 60-90 people along each month, at least half of whom we wouldn’t normally see on a Sunday. Many of them say that this service keeps church alive for them, as they can no longer manage a Sunday morning. Other churches where I’ve worked really struggle to manage the transition for older people who can no longer easily make a Sunday morning; this is a very neat solution.
